Lost in Translation: The Hilarious World of Auckland Linemarking

Have you ever driven down the road only to find yourself questioning whether the lines were drawn by a professional or a mischievous squirrel? Linemarking mishaps are not uncommon, and they often leave us scratching our heads or bursting into laughter at the sheer absurdity of it all. From crooked lines to bizarre shapes, these blunders turn mundane streets into unintentional comedy shows.

A newly marked out bus stop in Auckland’s suburb of Te Atatu saw a botched job done by council contractors misspelling the word STOP. The new bus stop, part of Auckland Transport’s (AT) work in Te Atatū Peninsula to improve public transport in the area, was added some time in the past four weeks by AT’s contractor.

The works involving the bus stop where the road text mishap occurred, outside the Te Atatū Library, took four weeks from January 29, and also included footpath widening and a P5 loading zone relocation.

AT Infrastructure and Fleet Specification Manager, Edward Wright, said: “AT is aware of a spelling error made by our contractor when they were installing a new bus stop in Te Atatū Peninsula last night as part of our North-West bus improvements.

So the next time you encounter a particularly amusing linemarking blunder, don’t forget to chuckle and appreciate the unexpected hilarity of the world around us. After all, life is too short to drive in straight lines all the time!
